Back in 2001, Toyota revealed a car that changed the car industry. The Prius became the first-ever production hybrid which herald the new age of vehicles that combined both an electric motor with a high-efficiency engine to produce more miles with less fuel.

Twenty-two years later, the Prius is known as one of the best-selling cars of Toyota. For that reason, Toyota has charmed as yet again with a new Prius. In the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show at the LA Convention Center, Toyota revealed the all-new 2023 Toyota Prius and its twin, Prius Prime.

This is what Dave Christ, Toyota group vice president, and general manager had to say about the new Prius: “The weight of the Prius name is heavy – it carries with it the identity of an entire category of vehicle powertrain. We’re confident the all-new 2023 Prius and Prius Prime will continue this important legacy.”

The fifth generation Prius comes in two variants, the Series Parallel Hybrid (HEV) model which is expected to be launched next month, and a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) model which is also expected to be launched in the spring of 2023. Each comes with more power with its output ranging from 194 and 220 horsepower, depending on the spec you go for.

Despite the power bump, the new Prius is expected to offer a slightly better fuel economy better than that of its predecessors. It is estimated that it will be doing a combined EPA of 57 MPG for the base front-wheel-drive LE models and 50 MPG with the top-end models.

Aesthetically, both the exterior and interior look amazing. The exterior keeps its straight line which descends from the roof to the headlights. The headlights come with C-shaped LED running lights while the rear has an LED light bar that serves as both its brakes and running lights. It sits two inches lower than its predecessor and is an inch wider.

The interior comes with a minimal approach compared to its predecessors which looks elegant. It comes with two full screens on the dash, one for the instrument cluster, and the other, a 12.3-inch screen that serves as its infotainment and gets awoken with the phrase “Hey Toyota.” It supports Apple CarPlay® and Android AutoTM wirelessly and has 6 USB Type-C ports scattered all over to give both driver and passengers a nice charging experience.

The standard Prius, Series Parallel Hybrid (HEV) model will come in LE, XLE, and Limited models, just like before and the Sporty Prius will be offered only in SE, XSE, and XSE Premium trim levels. This means you are bound to find your preferred choice out of all these options.

Even though the Prius has been around for Twenty-two years, it still manages to redefine the future of hybrid technology in cars will still for years to come.
