Google Builds Cloud Region In South Africa As Part Of Its $1 Billion Commitment To Africa.
This will help developers, businesses, and institutions across Africa to move more information online and create jobs. The Director of Google Cloud Africa, Niral Patel during the event said: “We believe in growing an open and healthy ecosystem of technology solutions to support Africa’s digital transformation goals which lead to more opportunities for businesses.”
Besides the Cloud Region, Google will be building in South Africa, a network expansion via subsea cables will be built to connect the Dedicated Cloud Interconnect site that will be built in Lagos, Nairobi, Johannesburg, and Cape Town which will have full-scale Cloud capability for Africa once on Google's grid.
South Africa is home to a growing number of startup sectors that will require strong cloud infrastructure to drive their growth hence the first country to introduce to Google's Cloud Region. So far this year, startups in South Africa have managed to raise around $506 million according to Crunchbase data. The majority of that money was siphoned toward fintech startups and machine learning companies all of which require strong cloud capabilities to remain efficient as they grow.
This Cloud Region will help propel Africa’s technological advancement more quickly as it aims to reach the state of America's IT advances in a couple of years. This will also assist upcoming developers in finding more online jobs and opportunities or creating their own which will motivate young ones also into reaching out for online opportunities.
